The new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the plug-in hybrid version of the small SUV that is popular with buyers. Its regular gasoline version received quite the facelift in 2022, and this version of its PHEV predecessor is much improved. The Outlander’s redesigned interior and exterior are well above anything Mitsubishi has produced in recent years.
Beneath the Hood
First of all, this is a plug-in hybrid, which means it has a battery pack that you charge at home or a public charging station. This battery operates the electric motors that permit you to travel short distances using just electric power. When the charge is depleted, the engine switches on, and it becomes just like a regular hybrid.
This version of the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV powertrain is configured just as before. It comes with a four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, a battery pack, and the standard all-wheel drive. The change is in the power, with an output of 249 hp, an improvement of 28 horses from the 2022 model year, with a hefty 332 lb.-ft. of torque.
Mitsubishi’s new Outlander PHEV now boasts seven drive modes, Normal, Gravel, and Snow, just as before, but Tarmac and Power have been added. The new version has battery settings to define whether running with battery power or using the engine is a greater priority for the driver.
Another impressive feature is one-pedal driving. This is common in fully electric vehicles, but not as well-known with plug-in hybrids. When the button is pressed for this function, it activates regenerative braking. As you take your foot off the throttle, the deacceleration helps to recharge the battery. It nearly brings the vehicle to a full stop without touching the brake pedal, though it doesn’t drop your speed all the way to zero.
Economic Impact
When fully charged, you can drive about 38 gas-free miles, which is an increase of 14 miles from the prior year. When the electric power is gone, the new version gets about 26 MPG combined average.
When you plug into the standard 120-volt household outlet, you can be fully charged in about 16 hours, and at 240 volts, you can be ready to roll out in about six and a half hours. Using a Level three CHAdeMO plug, you can charge the battery up to 80% in about 38 minutes.
Interior
The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has comfortable bucket seats with optional heated massage seats. The seats are larger and provide good support, which is also improved by a leather upholstery option available. The 2023 model has also added a standard third row of seats if needed, but this area can also be used to increase cargo space.
