The alternator enables your vehicle’s battery-powered systems like your lights and accessories to function by supplying those systems with power. Your alternator also ensures that your battery stays charged for the next time you drive. This component works with your battery and starter to provide power to the engine.

What Are Some Ways to Tell if Your Alternator Is Bad?

Remember, your alternator supplies electricity to keep your vehicle functioning, whether for accessories or for battery power, so alternator problems are usually associated with electricity, though not in every situation. Here are some signs and symptoms:

• Dashboard warning lights: Check engine lights and battery lights come on and stay on.
• Lights that are dim and weak: If you have an alternator problem, you may notice your lights are dim, which is more obvious at night. If it is an alternator problem, when you rev the engine as the RPMs increase, the lights will get brighter.
• Other electrical problems: If the alternator is faulty, you could see other impaired electrical issues arise in your vehicle’s electrical systems.
• Odd noises: If there is a problem with the belt or pully of your alternator, it may present itself as an unusual noise. A bad belt or pulley may make a squealing noise, while a problem with the alternator’s internal bearings may make a grinding or growling noise.
• Burning odor: If something smells like it is burning, this may also be a problem with a belt or pulley.
• A healthy battery that will not charge or will not hold a charge: Test your battery first to rule out a battery problem, but if it is healthy yet it discharges, then your alternator may not be charging your battery when you drive.
